EDITING

I edit for publishers, businesses and authors. Whether project-managing travel guides, working with bestselling authors, editing web content or proofreading documents, I ensure that every job is completed to the highest standard.

Please get in touch to discuss the details of your project.

LITERARY

I'm passionate about great writing, whatever the genre. I provide editorial services for literary agencies and publishers, and spent two years managing ARC, a Bristol-based editorial consultancy. I've written book reports for the BBC, copy-edited crime fiction and been a judge for the Bristol Short Story Prize in 2018 and 2019. I offer in-depth structural editing, copy-editing, proofreading, reader reports and consultancy.

For independent authors developing their work, I also offer the following services:

Initial Consultation – £175

A detailed editorial assessment of your opening pages, based on the first 10,000 words, followed by an hour-long phone call.

If you're a novelist, you might be wondering if your story has a strong opening, if you’ve got the ‘voice’ of your central character right, or whether your concept has the potential to appeal to agents. As a non-fiction writer, you might be concerned about the quality of your proposal and whether you've found the best structure and style to convey your ideas. I’ll help you to answer those questions and offer advice on the next steps.

Full Manuscript Developmental Edit (fiction)  £400 for the first 60,000 words, £5 per 1000 words thereafter

A full appraisal of your novel, with detailed editorial commentary alongside your text, a comprehensive report and an hour-long follow-up phone call. Charged according to total word count.

I will respond to all aspects of your work, such as narrative voice, structure, plotting, characterisation and bring my knowledge of publishing to bear on your fictional concepts and use of narrative techniques. The final report and consultation will show you which areas need development and what you need to do to make your work appeal to agents and publishers.

Full Manuscript Developmental Edit (non-fiction) – £400 for the first 50,000 words, £7 per 1000 words thereafter

A full appraisal of your creative non-fiction – memoir, family history, history, biography – with detailed editorial commentary alongside your text, a comprehensive report and an hour-long follow-up phone call. Charged according to total word count.

I will respond to your structure, accuracy, the execution of your key concept and the readability of your work, and bring my knowledge of publishing to bear on the delivery of your ideas. The final report and consultation will show you which areas need development – whether you plan to submit the work to agents or publishers, or whether you want to self-publish.

TRAVEL

From Sardinia to South America, via British campsites and Belize, I've edited and project-managed many Rough Guides, fact-checked guidebooks for Dorling Kindersley and freelanced for Lonely Planet. The best travel writing is evocative, free from cliché and carefully researched. I can work with you to make your travel content genuinely inspiring, whether you need to hire a proofreader or a managing editor.

COMMERCIAL

I've edited content and managed projects for businesses big and small. From fine-tuning copy on projects for Google, Expedia and the International Hotels Group to proofreading teaching resources for AQA and editing reports for NGOs, I've worked with clients in education, technology, travel and the charity sector. I'm a careful listener and a conscientious editor who will help you to convey a clear message across print and digital platforms.
